چکیده

On-site underground background measurements were performed for the planned reactor-neutrino oscillation experiment KASKA at Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear power station in Niigata, Japan. A small-diameter boring hole was excavated down to 70m underground level, and a detector unit for γ-ray and cosmic-muon measurements was placed at various depths to take data. The data were analyzed to obtain abundance of natural radioactive elements in the surrounding soil and rates of cosmic Preprint submitted to Elsevier Science 13 July 2006 muons that penetrate the overburden. The results will be reflected in the design of the KASKA experiment.

Chooz and Perry: New Experiments for Long Baseline Reactor Neutrino Oscillations

We discuss the Chooz experiment, a long baseline search for neutrino vacuum oscillations, which will utilize a gadolinium-loaded liquid scintillation detector one km from a large nuclear power station. The 300-mwe underground site of the detector reduces cosmic ray muons, the main source of background in this type of experiment, by a factor of 300, thereby allowing clean detection of antineutri...

MEASUREMENT OF sin 2 2θ13 BY REACTOR EXPERIMENTS AND ITS SENSITIVITY ∗

Reactor experiments offer a promising way to determine θ13 and are free from parameter degeneracies in neutrino oscillations. It is described how reactor measurements of sin 2θ13 can be improved by a near-far detector complex. The experimental lower bound is derived on the sensitivity to sin 2θ13 & 0.02 based on the rate analysis, and an idea is given which may enable us to circumvent this boun...

Testing for New Physics with Low-Energy Anti-Neutrino Sources: LAMA as a Case Study

Some electroweak models with extended neutral currents, such as those based on the E6 group, lead to an increase of the ν−e scattering cross section at energies below 100 keV. We propose to search for the heavy Z ′ boson contribution in an experiment with a high-activity artificial neutrino source and with a large-mass detector. We present the case for the LAMA experiment with a large NaI(Tl) d...

Reactor Antineutrino Signals at Morton and Boulby

Increasing the distance from which an antineutrino detector is capable of monitoring the operation of a registered reactor, or discovering a clandestine reactor, strengthens the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons Treaty. This report presents calculations of the reactor antineutrino interactions, from both quasi-elastic neutrino-proton scattering and elastic neutrino-electron scattering, in a ...

Proposal for US Participation in KamLAND

The persistence of deficits found by solar neutrino experiments and the impressive results from Super-Kamiokande on atmospheric neutrinos are the impetus for new, higher sensitivity measurements of neutrino oscillations. The KamLAND experiment will exploit the old Kamiokande underground site and the presence of large nuclear power reactors to obtain two orders of magnitude more sensitivity than...
